Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today emphasized the government’s commitment to guaranteeing equal rights for all citizens, irrespective of religion, race, or gender. He stated that any form of division among citizens based on these factors will not be tolerated.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon remarked that no individual should be deemed superior or inferior due to their religious or ethnic identity. He reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding the fundamental rights of every citizen, emphasizing that the government seeks to uphold these principles across the nation.

The minister’s comments were made during a reception at Mother Teresa Bhaban on the Holy Rosary Church campus in Tejgaon. The event was organized by the Gournadi Christian Co-operative Credit Union Limited, representing the Christian community from the Gournadi and Agailjhara upazilas.

Swapon further criticized those who use religion to dominate state affairs, noting that such practices undermine democracy. He asserted that religious beliefs are personal, while the state is a collective entity that belongs to everyone. He highlighted that the BNP-led government is working towards creating a non-discriminatory and democratic society free from religious divisions.

In his address, the minister praised the communal harmony in his constituency, where Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities have long lived together peacefully. Event speakers acknowledged the minister’s efforts, noting that Christians in Agailjhara have not experienced persecution under his leadership.

The attendees also called for a government holiday on Easter Sunday and requested the minister’s assistance in addressing local issues. The event was chaired by Silvaster Sarkar, with contributions from other notable speakers including Tejgaon Christian Association President Swapan Halder, organizer Francis Dhaki, former student leader Mohiuddin Badsha, and Agailjhara upazila JCD joint convener Ascent Roy.
