Govt Aims for Zero Suicide Rate, Says Health Minister

Dhaka: Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain announced today that the government is actively working to reduce the country's suicide rate to zero. Speaking at a seminar organized for 'World Suicide Prevention Day' by the Association for Disabled People (ADP) and the Rotary Club Ahsan Manzil at University Women's Federation College in Dhanmondi, the minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive societal approach to tackle the issue.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted that preventing suicide requires efforts beyond government initiatives. "We need to build a social movement involving people from all sections of society," he stated. Addressing students nationwide, he urged them to reject suicide as an option, stressing the importance of resilience in overcoming life's challenges.

Minister Sakhawat acknowledged that failure is an inevitable part of life and encouraged individuals not to lose hope when faced with setbacks. "We must keep trying to achieve success," he said, adding that perseverance can lead to significant progress over time. He also underscored the critical role of family support in suicide prevention, advocating for open communication and responsibility towards family members.

The minister called for increased social awareness, suggesting that positive thinking, mutual empathy, and innovative approaches can fortify the fight against suicide. The seminar also featured remarks from Dr. Nazmul Hossain, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Education, and was chaired by ADP Chairman Rowshan Ara Jaman. University Women's Federation College Principal Afroza Sharmin concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
