Dhaka: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced today that the government is seeking the repatriation of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina following her recent death sentence by an International Crimes Tribunal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal convicted Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal for crimes against humanity linked to their actions during last year's student-led July Uprising. The Home Adviser emphasized the government's intent to pursue Hasina's return, mentioning that a letter has already been sent to India, and another could follow if necessary.
Speaking after a Core Committee meeting on law and order at the Home Ministry, Chowdhury addressed concerns about public safety in light of recent crude bomb explosions and arson attacks. He assured the public that steps are being taken to manage these incidents and downplayed the level of panic, describing the occurrences as minor.
Chowdhury shared his recent travel experiences through districts known for unrest, such as Madaripur, Faridpur, and Gopalganj, and reported no significant incidents during his journey. He affirmed ongoing efforts to apprehend individuals involved in the recent attacks.
In response to media inquiries, the Home Adviser urged accurate reporting to counteract propaganda from neighboring countries. He also commented on the order given to Dhaka and Chattogram Metropolitan Police to shoot at sight, explaining it as a measure for self-protection. The Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry supported this stance, citing the universal right to self-defense.
