Dhaka:The government has called on the Election Commission (EC) to finalize five local government elections by June of the next year, emphasizing its commitment to conducting these polls within the current fiscal year.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD), and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam stated that approximately Tk 6,000 crore has been allocated for these elections. If the elections are not completed within the fiscal year, the funds will remain unspent and carried over to the next fiscal year.

During a preparatory meeting on the Village Police Grand Rally, the state minister mentioned that the government had requested the EC to consider holding the elections in phases to meet the deadline. However, the final decision on whether the elections can be conducted within the proposed timeframe remains with the EC.

Shahe Alam reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring free, fair, and impartial local government elections, stating that neither the government nor the administration would interfere in the electoral process. Necessary instructions have been issued to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

Additionally, the state minister noted that dengue prevention activities would continue every Saturday until December 12, involving cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns with the participation of Scouts and volunteers.

Regarding the Village Police Force, he mentioned that proposals have been sought to improve its legal authority and benefits. The Village Police Grand Rally, expected to draw around 50,000 attendees, is scheduled for November 7, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as the chief guest.
