Dhaka: The government today reaffirmed that the upcoming parliamentary polls would be held in February 2026. This assurance was made following an emergency meeting of the Council of Advisers at the Chief Adviser's Office, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Law Adviser Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, speaking at a press briefing at the Karabi Hall in the Chief Adviser's Office, confirmed the government's commitment to holding the elections in the first half of February 2026. The meeting focused on finalizing the July National Charter Order, organizing a referendum, and determining its content, as proposed by the National Consensus Commission.
Professor Asif Nazrul expressed gratitude to the Consensus Commission and political parties for reaching a consensus on key reform issues, although differences emerged regarding the timing and content of the referendum. The meeting highlighted concerns over these differences and emphasized the need for a final decision on the referendum's timeframe and subject matter.
The Council of Advisers urged allied political parties of the anti-fascist movement to hold discussions and provide unified guidance to the government within the next seven days. Present at the briefing were Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
