Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday announced that the government is prepared to take action if specific evidence of extortion is provided. This statement comes in response to allegations by the Leader of the Opposition that extortion is contributing to rising commodity prices.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Salahuddin Ahmed conveyed that the government is open to receiving any records or evidence from the Leader of the Opposition or journalists, which would enable them to address the matter effectively. This response followed a meeting at the Secretariat focused on law and order, security at sacrificial cattle markets, and overall preparations for Eid-ul-Azha.
The Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, recently accused that extortion is causing a surge in commodity prices. His claim emerged after visiting the Shah Ali wholesale market in Mirpur-1, where traders reportedly expressed concerns over silent extortion and inflated shop rents. Officially rented shops for Tk 5,000 at the government market are allegedly being sublet for up to Tk 1,50,000, imposing additional financial burdens on businesses.
Traders have reportedly expressed fear in identifying those involved in extortion. In response, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman urged collective resistance against such practices and promised support to traders willing to oppose extortion.
Highlighting the allegations, Salahuddin emphasized that immediate action will be taken if authorities receive concrete information. He also noted that a nationwide special drive has been ongoing since April 30, targeting extortionists, terrorists, armed criminals, drug traders, and gamblers. Special focus has been placed on arresting drug dealers and illegal arms holders.
Police Headquarters, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and district police superintendents have been directed to regularly submit progress reports on these drives, Salahuddin stated.
