Government Plans to Drill 52 New Gas Wells to Alleviate Energy Crisis

Dhaka:The State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mir Shahe Alam, announced the government's decision to drill 52 new gas wells in an effort to address the ongoing energy crisis in the country. The initiative aims to counteract the effects of a lack of new drilling activities over the past two decades.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mir Shahe Alam highlighted recent positive developments regarding new gas discoveries in the Bhola, Noakhali, and Titas gas fields. These findings are expected to contribute significantly to the nation's energy resources.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the 14th International Agricultural Technology Fair-2026 at the International Convention City Bashundhara in Dhaka. The state minister also discussed the government's efforts to modernize agriculture, enhance productivity, and secure food supplies through sustainable and technology-driven farming practices.

The agricultural fair has attracted participation from approximately 250 organizations from 12 different countries, showcasing a range of agricultural technologies and innovations across 53 stalls. The exhibition is set to continue until November 7.

Mir Shahe Alam emphasized the importance of underground pipeline-based irrigation systems, which have reportedly reduced water usage in agriculture by 40 percent, thanks to support from organizations like the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority and the Rural Development Academy (RDA). Additionally, he advocated for the proper use of fertilizers, increased use of organic fertilizers, and the establishment of factories to process surplus potatoes into starch powder in the northern region.

Plans are also underway to upgrade Bogura Airport into an international airport with cargo facilities to boost the export of potatoes and vegetables. Special guest Abdul Majid Pramanik, Director General of the RDA, underscored the need for agricultural mechanization and improved coordination among research, education, and industry sectors.

The fair is a joint effort organized by the RDA, Bogura, and LIMRA Trade Fairs and Exhibitions.
