DHAKA: The government is making concerted efforts to curb the rising prices of essential commodities, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced today. “We continue our efforts on how much the prices of the daily essentials can be reduced,” he stated during a regular press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Alam highlighted that the price of eggs has already been reduced due to government interventions, and the prices of other essential goods are also on a downward trend. He addressed reports claiming that the price of potatoes had skyrocketed to TK 400, dismissing them as sporadic and misleading.

In response to inquiries about minority rights, Alam assured that the government remains vigilant, having ensured robust security during the recent Durga Puja celebrations. Citing a police report, he noted that crime incidents have decreased compared to the previous year, indicating an improvement in the law and order situation.

Regarding the ongoing cr
isis of seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University, Alam mentioned that the government is actively engaged in discussions with stakeholders, acknowledging that not all issues can be resolved immediately. He urged students to remain calm, expressing optimism that the situation would be resolved soon.

Addressing questions about the formation of the Media Reform Commission, Alam disclosed that a diverse panel with solid backgrounds has been selected. The government has constituted an 11-member commission, headed by veteran journalist Kamal Ahmed, with the expectation of a comprehensive report. This was formalized through a Cabinet Division gazette notification issued on Sunday.

The briefing was attended by Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretaries Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Apurba Jahangir.
