Feni:The government has taken steps to revive the historic Dost Textile Mills in Feni, which was closed in 2011 after facing years of financial losses. Efforts are in progress to reopen the mill or establish a modern and sustainable industrial facility at its location.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, and other relevant authorities are exploring options to restart the mill at Ranirhat, near Feni town. Industrialist Dost Mohammad originally established the mill in 1965, which became a nationalized entity in 1972 following Bangladesh's independence.
The mill was once a significant source of employment for over a thousand workers and contributed to the national economy through the export of yarn. However, it began incurring losses around 1990 and was permanently closed in 2011. The machinery was later sold at auction, and the site has since become neglected.
Feni-2 lawmaker Professor Zainal Abedin VP has actively sought the reopening of the mill, sending a letter to the Prime Minister advocating for either reopening the mill or establishing a new industrial facility. Following this, the Prime Minister's Office instructed the Ministry of Textiles and Jute to take necessary administrative actions and report on the progress.
The proposal to revive the mill, potentially through a public-private partnership or as a specialized industrial zone, was submitted to the Prime Minister in May and approved on June 23. Authorities have been directed to take steps for implementation and update the Cabinet Division on progress.
The current condition of the mill premises reflects its disuse, with efforts underway to maintain the property. Chief Executive Officer Bulbul Ahmed, who took charge on July 25, indicated that the government's higher authorities are considering different types of industrial activities for the site, which may not necessarily involve textile manufacturing. He emphasized the potential for industrial development and employment opportunities if the facility is revived.
