Dhaka: The council of advisers has made the decision to prohibit all activities of the Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the conclusion of trials involving the party and its leaders at the International Crimes Tribunal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the council reached this decision during a special meeting held at the State Guest House Jamuna. The meeting also led to the approval of an amendment to the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act. This amendment introduces a provision that allows the International Crimes Tribunal to punish any political party, as well as its affiliated bodies or supporters.
The council's decision extends to banning all Awami League activities, including those on cyberspace, under the Anti-Terrorism Act. This measure aims to safeguard the country's security and sovereignty, as well as ensure the safety of leaders and activists of the July Movement, along with the plaintiffs and witnesses involved in the International Crimes Tribunal cases.
A necessary circular to enforce this ban will be issued on the following working day, as confirmed by the statement. Furthermore, the council resolved to finalise and publish the July Proclamation within the next 30 working days.
