Dhaka: The government has taken legal action by filing a petition to stay the recent High Court order, which mandates the cessation of battery-run rickshaw operations on the streets of Dhaka within three days. This petition has been submitted to the relevant wing of the Appellate Division, and the chamber judge court of the Appellate Division is expected to review the plea today. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the High Court's directive was issued by a division bench consisting of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi on November 19. The decision came after the court heard a writ petition advocating for the removal of battery-run rickshaws. The court's order requires several key officials-including the Home Secretary, LGRD Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and the authorities of the two city corporations-to implement the directive without delay. Moreover, the court has issued a rule demanding an explanation from these authorities for t heir alleged inaction in halting the operations of battery-run rickshaws, questioning the legality of such inaction. The writ petition prompting this ruling was submitted by an alliance representing paddle-run rickshaw owners and was presented in court by Barrister HM Sanjid Siddiqui and Barrister Tahsina Tasnim Mridu.
