Gopalganj woman who ‘set on fire by brother-in-law’ dies

A 50-year-old woman who was set on fire allegedly by her brother-in-law after over land dispute on Tuesday died at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.

 

The deceased was identified as Sufia Begum, wife of Yusuf Ali Molla, a retired policeman of Kashiani upazila.

Dewan Sadiqul Islam, sub-inspector of Kashiani Police Station, said Yunuf had long standing enmity with his brother Liakat Ali Mollah over the ownership of a piece of land.

 

As a sequel to the enmity, Liakat dragged out his sister-in-law Sufia of her house in absence of his brother Tuesday morning. Later, he set her on fire after tying her up to a guava tree.

 

Hearing screams of Sufia, local people rescued her and took her to a local hospital.

 

Later she was taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where she succumbed to her injures around 7 am on Wednesday.

A complaint was lodged with Kashiani Police Station on Tuesday, said SI Dewan.

 

Police arrested Liakat from Keraniganj upazila for his alleged involvement in the killing.
