A Chattogram court here today awarded 12 years of rigorous imprisonment to a man for his involvement in smuggling of gold in 2019.
The Judge of Chattogram Metropolitan Session Court Dr Begum Jebunnesa passed the order convicting Md Didurul Alam, son of Md Mahbub Alam of Dewanpur village under Raozan upazila of the district.
The court also fined Tk 50 thousand to the gold smuggler, in default, he will have to suffer more three months of imprisonment.
The prosecution story in brief is that Didurul Alam was arrested with 96 pieces of gold bars worth TK 5.76 crore at Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport on April 9 in 2019.
Airport official Karunamoy Chakma filed a case against convicted Didurul Alam with Patenga thana on April 9 in 2019.
Police submitted the charge sheet before the court on 26 September in 2019 while the court framed charges against him on 26 January in 2020.
The court after examining 11 prosecution witnesses out of 16 awarded the verdict convicting Md Didurul Alam.
The convicted person was present in the court while pronouncing the verdict, court sources said.
