Dhaka: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) officials today recovered 4.204 kilograms of gold-like paste, estimated to be worth around Taka 7.5 crore, from the tank of a commode at a washroom of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, acting on a tip-off, a team from the CIID conducted the operation around 6:00 pm and recovered eight egg-shaped packets wrapped in polythene from inside the tank of a high commode at a washroom adjacent to Belt No. 1 of the Customs Hall.
The officials recovered the packets in the presence of representatives of various intelligence and relevant agencies working at the airport, as stated in an NBR press release. The packets were opened at the inventory table of the Customs Hall, where officials initially found 4.204 kg of gold-like paste inside them.
The CIID mentioned that the packets had no identifiable owner at the time of recovery. The authorities have now engaged a registered goldsmith to separate gold from the paste and determine its actual weight and purity.
According to the preliminary assessment, the recovered gold could have a market value of around Taka 7.5 crore. The CIID reported that the exact quantity, purity, and value of the recovered gold would be determined after the completion of the examination and separation process.
