Gazipur: Home Adviser Lt Gen (rtd) Jahanagir Alam Chowdhury announced today the establishment of glass-walled interrogation rooms to allow public observation of the treatment of individuals under remand. This initiative aims to ensure transparency and accountability in police procedures.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the adviser discussed the ongoing investigation delays concerning cases filed after the July uprising, attributed to the large number of accused individuals. Speaking to journalists at Gachha Thana under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, he emphasized the diligent efforts by police to accurately identify the real culprits among many innocent individuals entangled in these cases.

In response to a journalist’s inquiry, Chowdhury acknowledged past practices where cases would cite a limited number of named individuals alongside numerous unidentified persons. Recently, however, cases have been filed against significantly larger groups of 200 to 250 people. This has led to the inclusion of some criminals and many innocent people, contributing to investigation delays.

Jahangir Alam highlighted ongoing police reforms as a continuous government effort, mentioning a pilot project aimed at further improvement. Addressing previous complaints about police reluctance to accept general diaries (GD) and cases, he noted that citizens can now file GDs or cases online, reducing the potential for harassment.

The adviser assured that any police personnel found engaging in ‘case trading or corruption’ would face consequences. Already, 84 officers have been reassigned and 30 to 40 have been forcibly retired due to such issues.

Chowdhury identified corruption as the nation’s primary problem, asserting that curbing it would significantly advance the country. He urged journalists to contribute actively to this fight against corruption.

During his visit to Gachha Thana and police barracks, the adviser was accompanied by Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr. Nazmul Karim Khan and other senior metro officials.
