Dhaka: Germany will give Bangladesh greater prominence in future cooperation on nature conservation, a German parliamentary delegation head announced after concluding a weeklong visit focusing on climate and environmental challenges.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the delegation from the German Bundestag Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection visited Bangladesh from April 7 to 12, as detailed in a press release issued by the German Embassy in Dhaka. The delegation was led by Deputy Chairman Michael Thews and included members of parliament from different political parties.
During the visit, the delegation engaged in high-level political consultations and conducted field visits across the country to gain firsthand insight into Bangladesh's efforts in climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, water protection, and pollution management. In Dhaka, the delegation met with Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, where both sides emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and explored future collaboration on environmental issues.
The delegation visited Savar to review the environmental impact of the leather and textile industries, and later traveled to Khulna to observe German-supported climate adaptation and livelihood projects. They also discussed local climate challenges with city authorities. Additionally, they visited the Sundarbans to learn about biodiversity conservation efforts and traveled to Satkhira to meet with climate-vulnerable communities benefiting from German development cooperation.
The parliamentarians highlighted Bangladesh's vulnerability to climate change while acknowledging the resilience of its communities. Head of the delegation Michael Thews stated that Germany would continue to support Bangladesh with its technical expertise and elevate the country's prominence in future environmental cooperation.
German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Rdiger Lotz remarked that the visit reflects Germany's commitment to addressing the global climate crisis, noting that Bangladesh is significantly affected and a leader in adaptation strategies. The delegation plans to present its findings and recommendations in Germany following its return, as stated in the release.
