Rangpur: Vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali today equated the genocide of innocent unarmed Bengalis in 1971 with the killings of July-August 2024. “It is necessary to ensure a fair trial of the 2024 genocide so that such barbaric killings do not happen in the future,” he stated while addressing a discussion held at the university’s administrative building.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BRUR authority organized the discussion as part of the observance of Genocide Day-2025. The event was presided over by Dr. Md. Tajul Islam, Convener of the March 26 Independence Day and National Day 2025 Celebration Committee and Professor of the Department of Mathematics.
During the event, the Vice-chancellor reflected on the historical events of March 25, 1971, when the Pakistani invading forces executed a brutal genocide on the Bengali nation. He described the night as a turning point in the nation’s history, marked by the use of sophisticated weapons by the Pakistani military across the country, including in Dhaka.
Freedom fighter Md. Ansar Ali, who spoke as a special guest, recounted various incidents of the brutal genocide carried out by the Pakistani military forces in 1971. Other notable speakers included Registrar Dr. Md. Harun-or Rashid, Director of the Office of the Students’ Affairs Professor Dr. Md. Ilias Pramanik, and Head of the Department of Political Science Dr. Md. Tanjiul Islam.
The event was attended by deans of faculties, heads of departments, teachers, and university officials.
