Gender Equality in Climate-Smart Agriculture: Innovative Solutions for Myanmar’s Women Farmers

Yangon: Why do effective solutions often fail to reach the front-line communities that need them the most? This question became clear when transitioning to work directly with smallholder farmers in an agricultural enterprise. Across South-East Asia, women are the backbone of agricultural labor but remain an invisible workforce, handling heavy field tasks and managing household survival during crises. Despite their critical role, cultural norms keep them in the shadows, limiting access to formal agricultural advisory support and preventing them from attending public training sessions or asserting their worth. This makes information access a crucial gender equality issue, especially as climate change introduces erratic rainfall, sudden pests, and severe flooding, putting women farmers at the greatest risk due to their exclusion from protective systems.

According to UN Women, these challenges fueled the creation of AgriMway, a digital agricultural extension platform designed for smallholder farmers in Myanmar, with a focus on women and youth. The platform was founded at the intersection of climate resilience, gender equity, and digital agriculture, leveraging a background in commercial brand management, NGO development programs, and agricultural technology. To expand its reach, the Agri-EmPower initiative was developed under the UN Women EmPower Academy, providing an AI-powered climate advisory layer on top of the digital community. This localized AI Advisory framework uses retrieval-augmented generation to convert complex global climate data and agricultural science into practical guidance for women rice farmers in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Eight years of fieldwork reveal that digital tools alone do not change behavior. Real impact arises from designing systems that align with actual living conditions, combining technology with trusted community partners. This approach was demonstrated through the Waste-to-Wealth sustainable agriculture training workshop in eastern Thailand, part of the U.S. Department of State's Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Reciprocal Exchange Project. By engaging with Thai smallholder farmers and introducing biodecomposer methods to replace crop residue burning, the team tracked considerable financial savings and improved understanding of soil biology, leading to a commitment to sustainable practices among participants.

AgriMway's human-centered approach has built a community of over 15,000 followers, addressing 20 to 40 urgent crop and pest crises monthly. This success highlights that trust-based delivery fosters rapid community adaptation. True youth leadership involves building bridges and driving systems change. Experiences with networks such as the UN Women 30 for 2030, the UN Women EmPower Academy, the Harpswell ASEAN Women's Leadership Summit, and the YSEALI Professional Fellows Program emphasize the importance of using AI and digital technologies as infrastructure to translate global science into localized action.

The call to action for international institutions and governments is to move beyond symbolic celebrations of youth and women in agriculture, advocating for genuine, systemic financial investment in digital agricultural extensions intentionally built for women. Young change-makers are encouraged not to wait for permission to innovate but to use digital literacy to dismantle restrictive norms and build an inclusive, climate-resilient future.
