Dhaka:Satkhira-4 MP and expelled Jamaat leader Gazi Nazrul Islam has been placed on a four-day remand by a Dhaka court in connection with a case involving the abetment to suicide of his second wife, Mariam.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon after DB inspector Mohammad Salauddin presented Gazi Nazrul before the court following the completion of his previous four-day remand. The inspector requested a seven-day remand for further investigation.
The remand petition indicated that both Gazi Nazrul and his first wife were subjected to remand to examine their alleged roles in instigating, pressuring, or otherwise influencing Mariam to take her own life. The 19-year-old victim, Mosammat Mariam Khatun, was found hanging at NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, on September 20.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Monir Hossain, reported finding Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan inside a third-floor apartment. Following this discovery, Gazi Nazrul and his first wife were taken into custody for questioning.
Mariam's father, Masum Billah, filed a case against Gazi Nazrul and also implicated Mariam's maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman.
Gazi Nazrul Islam, who was elected as an MP from Satkhira-4 in the 13th parliamentary elections under the Jamaat-e-Islami banner, was expelled from the party after a video emerged on social media in July, purportedly showing him in a private moment with a young woman, later identified as his second wife, Mariam.
