Dhaka:The recent protests in Mirpur involving garment workers demanding a wage increase have sparked concerns about potential political exploitation and instability. The demonstrations, which included road blockades and arson attacks, are not merely viewed as incidents of worker discontent.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, there is a need to examine whether political interests are exploiting the workers' legitimate demands for fair wages. The garment industry is crucial to Bangladesh's economy, and ensuring financial security for workers is a shared responsibility of both employers and the state. The government has responded by forming a new wage board to address these demands, but the violence accompanying the protests has raised questions about underlying motives.

The demonstrations disrupted public transport and led to clashes with police, causing inconvenience to commuters and raising concerns about the movement's tactics and objectives. Police have arrested 11 individuals, alleging that they are not local workers but activists from banned political organizations attempting to incite violence.

The situation underscores the importance of distinguishing between genuine workers and those seeking to exploit the protests for political gain. While the government works to ensure fair wages, it also faces the challenge of maintaining industrial stability and addressing any attempts to destabilize the economy.
