Khulna:The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has captured Joynal Sardar, a fugitive and alleged close aide of executed criminal Ershad Shikder, in Sonadanga, Khulna city, ending a 27-year manhunt.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrest was made by a joint operational team of SRB-6 Sadar Company and SRB-8 Sadar Company around 1045 pm on Saturday. Joynal Sardar, 55, hails from Bongkura village in Gournadi, Barishal district, and is the son of the late Ahammad Ali Sardar.
Nistar Ahmed, commander of SRB-6, stated that Joynal was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in a 1999 murder case filed with Rupsa Police Station. The charges against him were proven beyond reasonable doubt. Additionally, he received a separate five-year rigorous imprisonment term and a Tk 5,000 fine for concealing the body, with an additional six months of simple imprisonment in case of default on the payment.
Joynal had been in hiding since the verdict. Following his arrest, he was handed over to the Sonadanga Model Police Station in Khulna for further legal proceedings, Nistar Ahmed confirmed.
