Dhaka: Adviser to the Prime Minister on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Zahed Ur Rahman, has stated that while there is a slight shortage in fuel supply, the situation remains controlled. The government is working to ease pressure by implementing subsidies and strict monitoring measures. “Operations have been intensified to prevent illegal hoarding and smuggling of fuel,” Rahman mentioned during a press briefing at the PID conference room at the Secretariat.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman highlighted the imminent launch of the “Krishak (Farmer) Card” in the agriculture sector. This initiative is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Pohela Boishakh, backed by an allocation of Tk 1,150 crore under the Annual Development Programme (ADP).

The adviser noted that significant progress has been made across various sectors despite ongoing challenges. The Ministry of Water Resources has commenced canal excavation in 54 districts to enhance agricultural production and water management. The Ministry of Commerce maintained market stability during Ramadan, with the Directorate of Consumers’ Right Protection conducting drives that led to 1,606 cases and fines amounting to Tk 2.64 crore. Essential commodities were also distributed at subsidized prices through truck sales.

In health matters, Rahman expressed concern over a recent Measles outbreak but assured that vaccination campaigns are underway in 18 upazilas. A nationwide vaccination drive is scheduled to start on May 3, aiming for completion by May 21. He acknowledged past negligence as a factor in the vaccination challenges.

On law enforcement, the Ministry of Home Affairs is executing eviction drives to clear footpaths of illegal occupation. In the water transport sector, efforts are being made to digitize vessel registrations. Environmental initiatives include the production of 1.5 crore saplings and the reclamation of approximately 198 acres of forest land for reforestation.

Youth and sports development initiatives are also in place, with a talent hunt program launching on April 30 and financial support for 129 international medal-winning athletes. In expatriate welfare, the repatriation of the bodies of Bangladeshis killed in Middle East conflicts has been completed, with their families receiving Tk 3 lakh in assistance and Tk 10 lakh in insurance coverage.

In the transport sector, plans include the introduction of GPS tracking in public vehicles, removal of unauthorized bus counters, and enhanced security at ferry terminals. Cultural initiatives are aimed at promoting reading habits among students through new competitions.

“The government is working in a coordinated manner in all sectors. Despite limitations, we are committed to improving the quality of life of the people,” Rahman added.
