Dhaka: Newly appointed State Minister for Religious Affairs Mohammad Shamim Kaiser today emphasized that significant efforts will be made to guarantee freedom of expression for individuals of all faiths and opinions, allowing them to express their views freely from their respective positions. He shared these remarks while speaking with journalists at the conference room of the Ministry of Religious Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat this afternoon, as mentioned in a press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister highlighted the unique nature of Bangladesh, noting that the vast majority of its citizens are devout. He described the country as a land of communal harmony and religious adherence. Shamim stressed that if followers of all religions genuinely practice and uphold their respective scriptures’ teachings, the country’s communal harmony will be further strengthened.
He referred to the establishment of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, crediting Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for realizing the necessity of a dedicated ministry for religious affairs in Bangladesh. He also acknowledged former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her high regard for religious principles. Shamim remarked that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has become a significant political force by emphasizing Bangladeshi nationalism and religious values, earning considerable support from the people.
Addressing a question regarding a statement by an organization concerning his appointment as state minister, Shamim acknowledged the improbability of unanimous acceptance of any political decision or appointment. He noted that, similar to elections where no party garners full support, no appointment is universally favored. Shamim cited the potential for misunderstandings when issues are not clearly explained or when partial information circulates, suggesting that increased communication and discussions could resolve such issues.
The state minister also recounted his visit to Jamia Madania Baridhara, where he engaged in discussions with senior Islamic scholars linked to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. He expressed confidence in having addressed their inquiries satisfactorily and appreciated their warm reception. Shamim emphasized that the Ministry of Religious Affairs collaborates with prominent Islamic scholars of various viewpoints, and he assured outreach efforts to leaders and spiritual guides of other religions to clear any existing confusion.
Present at the occasion were Religious Affairs Secretary Munshi Alauddin Al Azad, Islamic Foundation Director General Mohammad Mohibbullahil Baqee, and Additional Secretary (Hajj Wing) of the ministry Dr. Md Ayatul Islam, among others. Earlier, the state minister engaged in discussions with officials of the ministry and its affiliated organizations.
