Narayanganj: A Narayanganj court has convicted four individuals, sentencing them to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of a 23-year-old man in 2017. Narayanganj Senior District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad delivered the verdict, as confirmed by Court Police Inspector Abdus Samad.
According to United News of Bangladesh, those sentenced include Sajal Barman, son of Narayan Barman; Sanjir Barman, son of Pagal Chan Barman from Araihazar upazila; Ruma, daughter of Aynal Haque; and Rumi, daughter of Kader from the Fatullah area. The accused were not present during the trial and were sentenced in absentia.
In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on each convict. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two years of rigorous imprisonment.
The prosecution revealed that on April 13, 2017, Bhajan Chandra Das, son of Phony Chandra Das from Madhabdi upazila in Narsingdi district, was abducted by the convicts. They later demanded Tk 20,000 from his family as ransom for his release.
Tragically, Bhajan Chandra was murdered, and his body was buried on April 16, 2017. A case was subsequently filed with Araihazar Police Station following the incident. The police investigation eventually led to the identification and charge sheet submission against the accused.
