Gopalganj: Police arrested four leaders of the Awami League (AL) in Tungipara upazila during a 'Devil Hunt Phase-2' operation conducted on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The arrests took place in the Patgati Bazar, Kushli, and Sriramkandi areas of the upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, those arrested included Abhijit Kumar Saha, 45, the health affairs secretary of Tungipara Upazila Awami League; Jahangir Alam alias Jane Alam Sheikh, 48, a member of the Municipal Awami League; Shafiqul Islam Omar, 45, the science and technology affairs secretary of Kushli Union Awami League; and Alam Sheikh, 50, an Awami League leader.
Tungipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ayub Ali stated that all four individuals were brought before the court and subsequently sent to jail on Thursday afternoon. Jahangir Alam and Shafiqul Islam Omar faced charges related to an attack on police and vandalism of a vehicle at Baghiarghat School and College on February 2.
The other two individuals, Abhijit Kumar Saha and Alam Sheikh, were jailed in connection to a separate incident involving road blocking and causing public panic by burning tyres in Tungipara on July 16, related to an NCP rally. Police have indicated that the operation will continue as part of ongoing law enforcement efforts in the area.
