Dinajpur: Five people including three women were killed and 15 others injured in a road accident on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj regional highway in the Nurjahanpur area under Ghoraghat upazila in the early hours of today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tragic incident involved a Dhaka-bound passenger bus operated by Nabil Paribahan that collided with a parked mini truck. The accident occurred around 3 a.m. as the bus hit the stationary vehicle from behind before losing control and crashing into another truck carrying sand. The impact left five passengers dead on the spot, while 15 others sustained injuries.
Officer-in-Charge of Ghoraghat Police Station Najmul Haque confirmed the fatalities, stating, “Three people died on the spot and nine people were taken to the Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where on-duty doctors declared two more dead.” He added that police and fire service personnel promptly responded to the scene to conduct rescue operations and are working to identify the other deceased.
Of the injured, six were transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as their condition worsened. The deceased include Tamanna Akhter, 24, and Aminul Islam, 35, both residents of Panchagarh sadar upazila. The identities of the other victims remain unknown at this time.
ANM Niamat Ullah, assistant superintendent of police for the Hakimpur-Ghoraghat circle, reported that both the coach and the pickup van involved in the accident have been taken into police custody. The driver, helper, and supervisor of the bus fled the scene following the collision. Authorities have recovered the bodies and sent them to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital morgue for further procedures.
