Sherpur: A mobile court in Jhenaigati upazila of the district has sentenced five individuals to two months’ imprisonment each for illegally extracting and transporting sand. The operation unfolded on Sunday afternoon, targeting the Tawakuncha area where unauthorized sand lifting activities were reportedly taking place.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the drive was spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Anindita Rani Bhowmik. The action was initiated following secret information that confirmed the ongoing illegal activities. The convicted individuals include Saiful Islam, 35, and Abdul Momin, 34, both from Kangsha village, along with Mona Sarkar, 29. Additionally, Hanif Uddin, 45, from Balijhuri area, and Qamar Ali, 50, from Kharamora area, were also apprehended.
Officer-in-Charge of Jhenaigati Police Station Kamrul Islam confirmed that the convicts have been sent to jail. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Al-Amin emphasized that operations against illegal sand extraction and transportation will persist. He assured that the upazila administration is committed to carrying out regular operations to curb such unlawful activities.
