Five Including AL Leader Arrested for Alleged Involvement in Ashulia Mass Killing

Dhaka: Dhamrai police have arrested five leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, including a former upazila chairman, for their alleged involvement in a mass killing in Ashulia during last year’s mass uprising. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhamrai Thana, Monirul Islam, stated that the arrests took place in a residential area at Nabinagar during a raid at approximately 10:30 pm on Monday.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrestees include Mohaddesh Hossain, former organizing secretary of Dhamrai upazila Awami League and chairman of Dhamrai Upazila Parishad, Sanaul Haque Sujon, general secretary of Dhamrai Poura AL and former member of Dhaka District Council, Moshiur Rahman, former chairman of Dhamrai sadar union, Aminul Islam, president of the recently banned Chhatra League Nabojug college unit, and Chhatra League worker Ahad Hossain.



The police report that Afiqul Islam Sad, a college student from the area, sustained bullet injuries in front of Dhamrai Harding Government School and College on the morning of August 5 last year while participating in the mass uprising. He was subsequently taken to Savar Enam Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on August 8.



Azim Uddin, Sad’s grandfather, filed a case on August 21 at Dhamrai Thana, naming 82 leaders and workers of the Awami League, including former lawmaker Benzir Ahmed, as responsible for the killing. The arrested individuals were named in the case and reportedly went into hiding after the incident on August 5 last year, according to the police.



The police have stated that all the arrested individuals have been sent to court for further legal proceedings.
