Narayanganj: Five members of a family, including three young children, were severely burned in an explosion, suspected to have been caused by a gas line leak, at Fatullah in the Sadar upazila of Narayanganj district on Sunday morning.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the victims have been identified as Kalam, 45, his wife Salma, 40, their son Munna, 12, and two daughters, Munni, 10, and Kotha, 7, residents of Uttar Bhuigar in the Fatullah area. Local residents, quoted by the fire service, reported that the explosion occurred in a flat on the ground floor of an eight-storey building owned by Md Shahjahan at approximately 6:55 am, resulting in injuries to all five family members.

The injured individuals were promptly transported to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment. Md Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, explained that the explosion was likely triggered by gas accumulating in a closed room due to a leak in the gas line adjacent to the kitchen. He further noted that the explosion may have occurred when a lighter was ignited by the tenant in the morning.

Dr. Shaown Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the burn institute, provided details on the extent of the injuries, stating that Kalam suffered burns on 95 percent of his body, Salma on 60 percent, and the three children sustained burns of 30, 35, and 52 percent, respectively.
