Sylhet: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today lauded scientists for their contribution in the country’s fisheries sector. “There is no alternative to research to protect fisheries resources,” she said while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the three-day third International Conference for Sustainable Fisheries (ICSF) held at the Central Auditorium of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the conference was organized with the aim of developing sustainable fisheries management and research, exchanging innovative technologies, and increasing coordination among stakeholders. In her speech, Farida emphasized the importance of increasing the allocation for the research sector of the concerned research institutes and universities.
Farida also highlighted the adverse effects of excessive pesticide use in agriculture, particularly during the winter. She noted that these pesticides mix with water during the monsoon, causing harm to fish. To address this issue, she announced the formation of a national committee tasked with limiting pesticide use in the agricultural sector. This committee aims to find ways to reduce pesticide use, boost production, and protect fisheries resources.
