Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has emphasized the need for Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) to intensify research efforts on the production of ready-to-cook fish products, aiming to make fish more appealing to younger generations. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farida Akhter made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled "Annual Research Progress (2023-24) Review and Formulating Plan (2024-25)," organized by BFRI at Sech Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue. The adviser stressed the importance of accelerating fisheries research to address the nutritional requirements of the population. Fisheries and Livestock Secretary ATM Mostafa Kamal also addressed the event as the special guest, with BFRI Director General Dr. Anuradha Bhadra presiding over the session, as mentioned in a press release. Farida Akhter urged BFRI to map out the availability of different fish species across various regions of Bangladesh, which would serve as a valuable resource for the next generation to learn about fish. She also recommended that BFRI consider publishing its journal in both Bangla and English to enhance accessibility for readers. Discussing fish export, she cautioned against excessive fishing, warning that it could pose environmental risks. Special guest ATM Mostafa Kamal highlighted BFRI's success in reviving numerous indigenous fish species. He suggested that the institute should focus on researching methods to boost the production of these native fish species, making them more accessible to the public. The workshop featured Department of Fisheries (DoF) Director General Md Zillur Rahman as the guest of honor. The event was attended by over a hundred participants, including fisheries scientists, DoF officials, university teachers, representatives from development partner organizations, fish farmers, and fishermen. During the day-long workshop, a total of 51 research findings and proposals were presented.
