Rajshahi: Livestock experts at a recent discussion stressed the urgent need to enhance milk production and consumption as a strategy to eradicate malnutrition and promote a healthier society. “Milk consumption is very important for both physical and mental development of children. So, utmost emphasis should be given to ensuring fair prices and safe supply of milk,” they stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the District Administration and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in Rajshahi organized the discussion at the Rajabari Hat Dairy and Livestock Development Farm in Godagari Upazila, in observance of World Milk Day. The theme for this year’s event was “Let’s Celebrate the Power of Dairy,” highlighting the essential role of milk and dairy products in nutrition.
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Afia Akhter served as the chief guest, and Superintendent of Police Farjana Islam was the special guest. District Livestock Officer Dr Atwar Rahman presided over the event, which also featured contributions from Upazila Nirbahi Officer Faisal Ahmed, Livestock Officer Sharmin Shaila, Veterinary Officer Subrata Kumar Sarker, and Deputy Director of Dairy Development Farm Dr Ismail Haque.
In a keynote presentation, Prof Khandaker Mozaffar Hossain from the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Rajshahi University emphasized the crucial role of milk consumption in fostering a healthy nation. He pointed out that protein is an essential nutrient for brain development and other vital functions of the human body.
Dr Atwar Rahman highlighted the importance of expanding the livestock sector to tackle protein deficiency and ensure food security. He noted that many people suffer from malnutrition due to a lack of animal-based proteins such as milk, meat, and eggs. He suggested that developing local cattle breeds could increase meat production, lower prices, and reduce malnutrition.
Earlier, officials from the administration, police, and DLS organized a colorful rally around the Rajabari Hat Dairy Farm to commemorate World Milk Day.
