Dhaka:Combating juvenile gangs in Bangladesh requires more than arrests and police raids, experts suggest, emphasizing the need for stronger family ties and greater community vigilance. They call for action against adults who exploit minors for criminal activities, responsible use of social media, and effective rehabilitation programs to prevent youth crime.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, law enforcement sources report that approximately 386 juvenile gangs are active across the country, with 159 in Dhaka metropolitan areas and 227 in other cities and districts. Alongside operations against gang members, agencies are enhancing surveillance to identify masterminds and individuals linked to illegal activities.
Experts highlight that juvenile gang activity is connected to family relationships, educational engagement, and adolescent psychological development. They advocate a coordinated approach involving law enforcement, parents, educational institutions, and community organizations.
Md. Rezaul Karim Shohag of the University of Dhaka underscores the role of inadequate parental supervision and limited leisure opportunities in increasing adolescents' vulnerability to crime. He notes that early intervention through counseling and continued education is crucial for preventing criminal involvement.
Professor Dr. Fatema Rezina Iqbal also stresses the importance of family awareness regarding children's school attendance and online activities. She suggests limiting smartphone access for younger adolescents to prevent disruptions to their studies and daily routines.
Authorities are conducting operations to apprehend gang members and dismantle criminal networks. Wing Commander MZM Enthekhab Chowdhury of the Special Response Battalion mentions efforts to address gang-related activities in specific Dhaka areas, including Mirpur and Tejgaon.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Akter Hossain states that the police are actively pursuing legal action against gang members, with 1,219 listed juvenile gang members in the capital alone. Law enforcement is also working to raise awareness among parents.
Experts and officials agree on the necessity of beat policing, regular patrols, and community initiatives to prevent juvenile crime. They emphasize that sustainable progress depends on effective policing coupled with strong family and community support.
