Chandpur:The bodies of former Laxmipur Model Union Parishad Chairman Selim Khan and his son Shanto Khan were exhumed from their graves in Sadar upazila of Chandpur district on Wednesday for autopsies following a court order.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the exhumation process was conducted under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Prottoy Hasem and the investigating officer of the case, Sub-inspector Chand Mia. Officer-in-Charge Foyez Ahmed of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station confirmed that the procedure was carried out in compliance with a court order and with approval from the deputy commissioner for appointing an executive magistrate.
Selim Khan, who was also the president of the union unit of Awami League, faced a ban on its activities. He was involved in newspaper publishing and owned the film production and distribution company Shapla Media. His son, Shanto Khan, was a film actor.
Selim Khan had been accused of several allegations, including illegal sand extraction from the Padma-Meghna rivers and irregularities in land acquisition for Chandpur Science and Technology University. He faced multiple cases, including those filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission and for alleged tax evasion.
On August 5, 2024, the day the Sheikh Hasina government was ousted, Selim and his son were reportedly trying to flee the area by motorcycle when they encountered a crowd in the Balia area of Chandpur Sadar. They were killed in a mob attack in the Farakabad area, and their bodies were subsequently buried at their family graveyard. Local residents noted that police did not initially recover the bodies due to prevailing tensions and public anger.
A case was registered with Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station concerning the incident, leading to the court's order for the exhumation of the bodies for further investigation through autopsies.
