Dhaka: A court here today sent former state minister for planning, Dr. Shamsul Alam, to jail in a case lodged over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque issued the order as police presented the former junior minister before the court, requesting to detain him until the investigation concludes.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Detective Branch of police apprehended Dr. Shamsul Alam from the capital’s Mohammadpur area at 12:30 am today. The former state minister faces multiple charges related to the July mass uprising.
Case documents reveal that the incident occurred on October 28, 2023, when the BNP organized a grand rally in the capital. On the same day, the Awami League (AL) held a counter-rally intending to disrupt the BNP’s event. Clashes erupted in Naya Paltan, where AL activists, allegedly supported by the police, attacked the BNP’s rally, resulting in the immediate death of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.
The case was officially filed with the capital’s Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2024.
