Dhaka: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has apprehended a former salesman in connection with the theft of a substantial amount of gold from a jewellery firm at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex. This arrest follows ongoing investigations into the embezzlement that spanned several years.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrested individual, Krishna Basak, also known as Swapan Basak, is the son of Gaur Chandra Basak from Daulatpur in Manikganj. The CID’s Dhaka Metro West Division apprehended him near the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex on Tuesday afternoon. This arrest was announced through a CID media statement issued on Wednesday.
The case was filed by the complainant whose father manages a jewellery business with multiple outlets at the complex. A stock audit revealed that approximately 7,550 bhoris of gold ornaments, valued at around Tk94.37 crore, were missing, with the thefts occurring between January 2019 and September 2024. Investigators allege that Krishna Basak, during his tenure as a salesman, conspired with others to misappropriate the gold, violating the trust of the business owner.
Further investigation uncovered a significant disparity between Basak’s declared income and his acquired assets. Despite earning a monthly salary of Tk10,000-Tk15,000, he amassed substantial wealth. His assets include an investment of about Tk 33 lakh in another jewellery business, a flat and parking space valued at Tk44.55 lakh, shares worth Tk16.78 lakh in the stock market, and 50 bhoris of gold documented in tax filings. Preliminary findings also suggest unusual banking transactions.
Authorities are currently seeking remand to recover the stolen gold and identify other co-conspirators. Earlier in the investigation, another suspect provided a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The CID’s Dhaka Metro West Division continues its efforts to gather further information and apprehend additional suspects implicated in the case.
