Dhaka: A court here today sent former lawmaker of Jhenaidah-3 constituency and Awami League leader Nobi Newaz to jail on charges of killing domestic help Liza Akther in the city’s Ramna Thana area during the July Uprising. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order and fixed April 16 for the remand hearing as police sought a seven-day remand.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DB police arrested Nobi Newaz from the city on Friday. The arrest follows a case statement where Liza Akther was reported shot during the student-led anti-discrimination movement on July 18 in the Ramna police station area. She succumbed to her injuries on July 22 while undergoing treatment.
Liza’s father, Md Joynal Sikder, filed a murder case naming 174 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on September 5. Nobi Newaz is one of the accused in the case.
