Controversial former Cox’s Bazar MP Abdur Rahman Bodi has gone viral on social media with a video of him beating two leaders of Awami League.

The incident occurred on Friday before Iftar during an extended assembly of Teknaf Municipal AL at Teknaf Upazila hall room.

According to witnesses, a group led by Bodi, his brother Abdus Shukkur, a self-proclaimed drug peddler and Nur Mohammad attacked Md Yusuf alias Mono, Joint Secretary of AL municipal unit and Md Yusuf Bhutto, Joint Secretary and advocate Mahmudul Haque, Health affairs Secretary of upazila AL.

Md Yusuf told UNB that he had an argument with Bodi as he was prioritizing the ward committee of AL over the municipal committee and Yusuf objected to it.

“At one point of the altercation Bodi got down from the stage to call his group from outside and they started beating me. As Yusuf Bhutto came to rescue me they attacked him too,” he said.

Nurul Bashar, General Secretary of the upazila committee of the party said,”The incident happened before my eyes. Bodi was involved in such occurrences even when he was in power but no effective steps were taken from the party.”

Advocate Rajit Dash, Joint Secretary of Cox’s Bazar district AL said, “We went for iftar when the incident occurred. Already Bodi has been warned for inducing such incidents in future through a meeting. If anyone lodges a written complaint against him action will be taken.”

Accused former MP Bodi, who stood aside for his wife MP Shahin Akhter at the last elections, was unavailable for a comment in this regard when contacted over phone.

On September 13, 2020, Bodi was indicted in a case filed by Anti-Corrruption Comisssion on charges of concealing information of assets worth Tk 57,11,500 and acquiring wealth illegally worth Tk 79,37,797.
