Ex Kishoreganj-5 Lawmaker Afzal Hossain Jailed Over Jubo Dal Leader’s Murder

Dhaka: A court here today sent to jail former lawmaker from Kishoreganj-5 constituency Md Afzal Hossain in a case filed over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim in 2023. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah passed the order as police produced Afzal before the court and pleaded to place him on a 10-day remand in the case.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court decided to hold a hearing on his bail plea and police petition for placing him on remand later, as the main case documents are yet to reach the court. Police arrested Md Afzal Hossain from Meherpur town on March 24.



The case documents reveal that the BNP called a grand rally on October 28, 2023. On the same day, Awami League also organized its own rally in the capital with the intention to foil the BNP’s rally. During the event, Awami League activists, with the assistance of the police, attacked the BNP’s rally in Naya Paltan, leading to Shamim’s death on the spot.



The case was officially filed with the capital’s Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2024.
