DHAKA: A Dhaka court has placed Abdullah Al Monjur, a former councillor of ward-25 of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), on a three-day remand in connection with an attempted murder case. The case involves an incident where Saiful Islam Mitul was injured during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the remand order after police brought Monjur, who also serves as the vice-president of the Tejgaon thana Awami League, before the court. Authorities had requested a ten-day remand to further investigate the case.
Monjur was apprehended by police earlier today in the capital's Uttara-14 area. The case stems from an incident on August 5, when Mitul participated in a rally at the Purana Paltan intersection, which called for the resignation of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The rally turned violent when police and Awami League affiliates allegedly attacked the protesters, resulting in Mitul sustaining shrapnel injuries to his eyes, head, and back.
Mitul subsequently filed a case regarding the incident on December 4 at the Paltan Model Police Station. The remand of Monjur is part of the ongoing investigation into the violent events of that day.
