Dhaka: Former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral (Retd) Sarwar Jahan Nizam passed away at 9.15 am today at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. He was 73. Members of the Bangladesh Navy, including the current chief of naval staff, have expressed deep sorrow over his death, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) release said here today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, his Namaz-e-Janaza will be held after Zuhr prayers on Saturday at the Bangladesh Navy headquarters mosque. He will be buried at the Banani Military Graveyard with military honours. Born on November 2, 1952, in Anwara upazila in Chattogram district, Nizam was commissioned into the Bangladesh Navy as a sub-lieutenant on June 1, 1973.
Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam held various important positions throughout his career. He took charge as the Chief of Naval Staff on February 10, 2007, and contributed to safeguarding the country's sovereignty and advancing the Bangladesh Navy through leadership.
He played a role in the modernisation and development of the Bangladesh Navy. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and many admirers. The Bangladesh Navy has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
