Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today emphasized the necessity of unity to ensure a free, fair, and impartial national parliamentary election in Bangladesh. He conveyed this message while addressing a gathering at a view exchange program titled "The Role and Responsibility of Poets and Writers in the Transition to Democracy," held at the National Press Club's Abdus Salam Hall.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by the BNP Media Cell, with Mohan Raihan, President of the Jatiya Kabita Parishad, presiding over the session. Rezauddin Stalin, the general secretary of the organization, delivered the welcome speech. Rahman highlighted the importance of establishing an accountable environment to protect people's voting rights and ensure democracy and freedom of speech.
Tarique Rahman reiterated that the ideals of the BNP align with the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people. He stated, "Today, many have spoken about belief and conviction in a unified manner. I believe our ideological position is also correct, one, and identical. We don't have even the slightest difference with your firm stance on independence, sovereignty, and democracy." He emphasized the party's commitment to preventing the return of autocracy, which the people of Bangladesh had previously rejected.
Rahman also called for unity against extremism and fundamentalism, acknowledging that while political ideologies may differ, the commitment to the country's sovereignty remains a common ground. He praised the role of poets and writers in shaping the nation's history, noting their influence in inspiring political movements during critical periods, such as the Liberation War and the July mass uprising.
The acting chairman concluded his address by urging citizens to unite and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the country's sovereignty. He called on everyone to echo unity in their efforts to uphold the values of independence and democracy.
Prominent figures such as BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni, Media Cell Convenor Professor Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, Adviser to BNP's Acting Chairman Dr. Mahadi Amin, and Amader Somoy editor Abu Sayeed Khan also spoke at the event.
