Dhaka:European Union (EU) Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner met with Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, to discuss the EU's 'Eastern Corridor Initiative.' The initiative aims to combat irregular migration to the EU by engaging with countries of origin, transit, and all stakeholders.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, was also present at the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussions focused on cooperation in migration management, returns, and combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

The State Minister reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to safe, orderly, and regular migration. She urged the EU and its Member States to expand opportunities for Bangladeshi skilled workers and professionals through practical and results-oriented mobility corridors as an incentive for regular migration. She also highlighted the Government's adoption of the National Action Plan (NAP) 2026-2030 for implementing the objectives of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM).

Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in migration. The State Minister expressed Bangladesh's openness to cooperation and informed the Commissioner of steps being taken to prevent and combat irregular migration, including initiatives against document fraud and criminal networks. She emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of irregular migration to facilitate pathways for regular migration.

The meeting underscored Bangladesh's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the EU, including expanding trade and investment cooperation. Both parties agreed to maintain dialogue and closer cooperation on shared priorities.

Commissioner Brunner is responsible for strengthening Europe's internal security and upgrading EU legislation and policies to address various threats, ensuring the basic right of every European citizen to feel safe. In February, the European Commission adopted a strategy to support EU eastern regions bordering Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, as part of a strategic investment in Europe's security, competitiveness, and future stability. Several regions from nine Member States have been particularly affected by hybrid warfare and related challenges.
