European Union (EU) External Action Service Secretary General Stefano Sannino today assured that the EU stands with Bangladesh and will assist in overcoming its current crisis.
He made this assurance during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday afternoon at the European External Action Service headquarters in Brussels, a foreign ministry’s press release said here.
During the meeting, Bangladesh foreign minister detailed the series of events leading up to the government’s decision to abolish the quota system in 2018, the recent legal petitions and the subsequent rulings by the highest court.
Hasan explained that unscrupulous elements had exploited student movements for their own gains leading to widespread anarchy, vandalism, and arson activities.
He assured that those involved in murders, vandalism, and arson would be brought to justice.
Secretary General Sannino welcomed the formation of a judicial investigation committee directed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to probe the inci
dents of casualties and attacks.
He expressed the hope that a transparent investigation would bring the culprits to justice and Bangladesh would soon return to normalcy.
The Foreign Minister emphasized the government’s responsible and sincere approach to the matter.
Hasan also highlighted the EU’s significant contributions to Bangladesh’s development journey and expressed hope for accelerated cooperation in the coming days.
Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Belgium Mahbub Saleh also present at the meeting.
