Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman announced that the proposed 'Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Remedies Act' is in its final stage of preparation and is expected to be presented before the Cabinet soon, with plans to introduce the bill in the next parliamentary session.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Minister revealed this information during the closing ceremony of a two-day Basic Mediation Training for Legal Professionals at Hotel InterContinental Dhaka. He mentioned that the draft law has been through inter-ministerial scrutiny, consultations with stakeholders, and review by the Secretaries' Committee.
The draft law, initially discussed during the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, has undergone multiple rounds of consultations and assessments. It has now been finalized and is awaiting Cabinet approval before being placed in parliament.
Regarding the proposed cyber law, the Minister stated that the government is formulating a modern legal framework to balance the constitutional right to freedom of expression with the need to address cybercrime, defamation, misinformation, and the misuse of artificial intelligence and other technologies. He emphasized that the government will not rush the process and will finalize the law after further scrutiny and consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The Minister assured that the government does not intend to silence citizens or restrict freedom of expression, but is committed to providing an effective legal framework to protect citizens' rights and reputations.
