Dhaka:Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has announced that the government will take stern action against any attempts to manipulate the LPG market, create artificial shortages, or hold strikes that disrupt supply.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister emphasized that LPG is an essential commodity and legal actions will be taken if its supply is disrupted to the detriment of public interest. This statement was made during a press conference after a meeting with LPG operators at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Uncertainty over global fuel supplies and prices due to ongoing conflicts has prompted the government to consult stakeholders to ensure adequate LPG supplies and maintain reasonable prices domestically. The private sector's role in LPG supply necessitates these discussions to address market challenges and maintain stability.
Minister Mahmud stated that authorities have been directed to ensure market price stability and prevent hardship for businesses. This was the third meeting with LPG operators, with previous sessions also reviewing market conditions. Further discussions are scheduled for October 20 to continue addressing business challenges and ensuring supply chain stability.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir highlighted that private-sector entities manage LPG supply and marketing, with prices set monthly by the government in line with international rates as determined by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission. Strategies to maintain stable LPG supplies were discussed, though details have not been disclosed yet.
Both ministers warned against market manipulation or strike threats, reaffirming the government's commitment to addressing legitimate trader concerns while promising strict action against any attempts to disrupt the market or public welfare.
