Dhaka: Despite repeated calls to conserve electricity, shopping malls and markets in Dhaka continue to display dazzling decorative lights, raising concerns about unnecessary power consumption.

According to United News of Bangladesh, many commercial establishments appear to be ignoring the government’s energy-saving directives, keeping bright and elaborate lighting arrangements switched on even during peak hours.

The government has issued directives to use electricity more efficiently, including maximising the use of natural daylight and avoiding unnecessary lighting and power use.

The measures come amid growing concerns over fuel and gas supply disruptions after the global energy market was affected by the ongoing United States-Israel conflict with Iran.

The photos were captured on Wednesday (March 11) from Gulistan and the New Market areas show rows of shops and market fronts illuminated with colourful lights.
