Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized the necessity of cooperation from all political parties to ensure the successful execution of the upcoming national elections and referendum, affirming that the elections are set for February 12. "This time, both the election and the referendum must be held successfully. No matter who says what, the elections will be held on February 12. This election will not be a manipulated one," he declared.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus made these statements during a meeting with a four-member delegation from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, led by its Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, at the State Guest House Jamuna. The delegation included Jamaat's Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, and Assistant Secretary General Mawlana Rafiqul Islam Khan. Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan were also present.
The discussions focused on various election-related issues. Jamaat leaders informed the Chief Adviser that the election campaign is slated to commence in full swing on January 22. They also noted that Jamaat-e-Islami has initiated campaigning in favor of a "Yes" vote in the referendum and both campaigns will proceed concurrently from January 22.
Responding to concerns raised by the Jamaat leaders, Prof. Yunus stressed the importance of conducting a credible election. He urged them to report any urgent information, complaints, or opinions related to the election so that these can be promptly addressed with the Election Commission. He assured that polling centers would soon be equipped with CCTV cameras, with officials at high-risk centers also using body-worn cameras to ensure transparency and security.
Addressing questions about the government's campaign for a "Yes" vote in the referendum, the Chief Adviser confirmed the legality of the campaign after consultations with relevant stakeholders. He emphasized that the interim government's role, established through a mass uprising, includes standing in favor of necessary reforms.
Prof. Yunus announced plans for effective mechanisms to resolve disputes at the local level during the election period, involving representatives from all political parties and stakeholders. A hotline will be established to handle election-related complaints. He called for unity among all parties to ensure a successful election process and to prioritize the nation's interests.
