Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reaffirmed his dedication to conducting general elections on February 12, 2026. Emphasizing the significance of this democratic process, Yunus stated, “The nation is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights which were stolen by the autocratic regime.”

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus conveyed these commitments during a telephone conversation with US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, at around 7:30 pm local time. The conversation, which spanned approximately thirty minutes, included discussions on trade and tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States, the country’s democratic transition, the upcoming election, and the murder of young Bangladeshi political activist Sharif Osman Hadi.

Sergio Gor, who also serves as the US Ambassador to India, extended congratulations to Professor Yunus for his leadership in recent tariff negotiations. Bangladesh has successfully reduced US reciprocal tariffs on its goods to 20 percent. The US Special Envoy also acknowledged the significant turnout at the funeral of Shaheed Osman Hadi.

During the call, Chief Adviser Yunus highlighted concerns about the alleged financial efforts by supporters of the ousted autocratic regime to disrupt the electoral process. He remarked that their fugitive leader was inciting violence, but assured that the interim government was “fully prepared” to handle any challenges that may arise.

“We have roughly 50 days to go before the election. We want to hold a free, fair and peaceful election. We want to make it remarkable,” Professor Yunus stated confidently. Present during this crucial call were Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, and SDG Coordinator and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed.
