Dhaka: Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury expressed optimism about the ongoing national election process in Bangladesh, stating that the current situation is notably better than during previous election periods, despite some isolated incidents of unrest.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Lt Gen Chowdhury addressed reporters following the Bangladesh Coast Guard Medal Award Ceremony in Agargaon, Dhaka. He acknowledged the occurrence of a few incidents but emphasized that overall conditions have improved. He remarked, “Everyone is now election-oriented,” and credited a higher power for the favorable circumstances.
When questioned about Transparency International Bangladesh’s report that 15 political activists have died since the election schedule was announced, Lt Gen Chowdhury refrained from direct comment and suggested consulting TIB for historical comparison data. He noted that many clashes stem from internal disputes within the same political factions, which complicates the response efforts of law enforcement.
Lt Gen Chowdhury also addressed concerns about potential violence escalation, asserting that while incidents occur, they are not on the rise. He highlighted the deployment of law enforcement personnel and urged citizens to exercise patience to prevent minor disputes from escalating.
Regarding claims that pirates have taken control of the Sundarbans, the adviser dismissed these as inaccurate, pointing to the ongoing tourism activities as evidence of maintained control. He also reported progress in recovering illegal firearms linked to violence.
In response to concerns about election-related violence impacting the polls, Lt Gen Chowdhury assured that the elections would proceed in a “free, peaceful and festive manner,” urging cooperation from all stakeholders.
The ceremony also recognized 40 Bangladesh Coast Guard members for their commendable service, with Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Nasimul Gani, Coast Guard Director General Rear Admiral Md Ziaul Haque, and other senior officials present.
